    Giordano, Halleran & Ciesla To Receive 2013 Pro-Bono Service Award By Volunteer Lawyers For Justice

    August 12, 2013 - Red Bank - On December 3, 2013, Giordano, Halleran, & Ciesla will be presented with the 2013 Pro-Bono Service Award by Volunteer Lawyers for Justice. Giordano, Halleran, & Ciesla is one of ten recipients of the 2013 Pro-Bono Service Award, recognizing "Heroes of Sandy" for their compassion, leadership, and hard work that aided in the development and success of VLJ's Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. The presentation of this award will take place at the 2013 Arts & Eats for Justice Gala in the Newark Museum.

    The firm's pro bono efforts, handled primarily by Litigation Practice Group Co-chair Michael J. Canning and Risa M. Chalfin, an associate in the practice group, include:

    • Assisting homeowners in filing insurance claims and appeals to recover costs incurred repairing homes damaged by Hurricane Sandy
    • Finding causes of property damage, whether pre-existing or created by Hurricane Sandy
    • Negotiating settlements between landlords and tenants

      Volunteer Lawyers for Justice is an organization that utilizes volunteer attorneys to provide legal services to economically-challenged adults, children, and families in New Jersey. In response to Hurricane Sandy, VLJ created a Disaster Legal Response Program to provide victims of the storm with legal assistance. Clinics were set up around the state allowing victims seeking legal advice about insurance, FEMA and contractor issues.
