Summer Associate Program

The Firm's Summer Associate Program runs for 11 to 12 weeks from May through early August and provides law students with an opportunity to experience a realistic view of associate life at Giordano, Halleran & Ciesla while providing the firm with an opportunity to better assess the skills of prospective associates. Our Summer Associate Program is an important source of hiring at the firm. We provide our summer associates with personal attention, varied assignments, feedback and hands-on experience with real client matters, while also including a variety of social events to mix and mingle with our attorneys outside of the work environment. Our goal is for you to experience our people and culture and to understand our work and clients to determine if there is a good fit for both Giordano and you.

Meet a Giordano Associate

Matthew J. Ceres

In 2004, I worked as a summer associate in the Real Estate, Land Use and Development Practice Area. The experience was both rewarding and educational. I had very little exposure to the practice of law prior to this position and was really looking for a hands-on experience. More

A few examples of assignments performed by former Summer Associates include:

  • Observation of court proceedings, and attendance at depositions, hearings and negotiations;
  • Drafting of sections of appellate briefs and trial court briefs;
  • Drafting of jury instructions;
  • Drafting of motions to dismiss;
  • Research of appellate issues for oral argument and participation in pre-argument briefings with clients;
  • Drafting of corporate formation documents and corporate transactional documents, including stock purchase agreements and asset purchase agreements;
  • Participation in client meetings, transaction structure meetings, document negotiations, transaction closings and other similar activities;
  • Drafting of escrow letters, leases and subleases;
  • Drafting and review of documents, and participation in meetings in connection with corporate finance transactions, restructurings, recapitalizations, and mergers and acquisitions;
  • Drafting and review of financing documents;
  • Drafting and review of various business agreements;
  • Research and analysis of intellectual property law;
  • Research and analysis of employment law; and,
  • Research and analysis of land use and environmental law.

Summer Associates are assigned supervisors who are partners with the firm to guide the Summer Associates, oversee their work and mentor them. These supervisors also manage the number of assignments given to the Summer Associates and give feedback to them over the course of the summer. The firm also conducts formal evaluations of our Summer Associates in the middle and at the end of the summer to provide feedback regarding their work. These evaluations are also forwarded to the firm's Hiring Committee for consideration.

We begin considering applications for our Summer Associate Program in the fall and usually make hiring decisions by December or January for the following summer.
